1. Definition and Concept

The term significant means important, and figures refers to numbers. Together, significant figures represent the important digits in a value that carry meaning contributing to its precision.

  • Formal Definition: All the accurately known digits plus the first doubtful digit in a measured value are called significant figures.
  • Precision Indicator: The number of significant figures reflects the precision of the measuring instrument used (e.g., common balance vs. electronic balance vs. sensitive jeweler's balance).

2. Rules for Counting Significant Figures

To accurately determine the number of significant figures in any given quantity, follow these fundamental rules:

Rule 1: All Non-Zero Digits Are Significant

  • Any digit from 1 to 9 is always significant (e.g., \(238\) has 3 significant figures).

Rule 2: Zeros Between Non-Zero Digits Are Significant

  • Any zeros trapped between two non-zero digits are always counted as significant (e.g., \(5.03\) has 3 significant figures).

Rule 3: Left-Side Zeros in Decimal Numbers Are Not Significant

  • In numbers less than one containing a decimal, zeros on the left of the first non-zero digit are placeholders and are not significant (e.g., \(0.005\) has 1 significant figure).
