What is Science?
The word "science" refers to the study of facts through a systematic process. The scientific method involves four essential steps:
- Observation: Collecting information by observing phenomena in nature.
- Mathematical Representation: Presenting observations using mathematical frameworks and formulas.
- Experimentation: Justifying ideas and observations through rigorous experiments.
- Conclusion: Reaching a final conclusion about the observed facts.
Definition of Physics
Physics is a branch of science concerned with nature and the properties of matter and energy. The word "physics" originates from the Greek word "physis", meaning "nature" or "knowledge of nature".
Key components studied in physics include:
- Matter: Anything that occupies space and has mass. Matter exists in four primary states: Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma.
- Energy: The capacity to do work. Forms of energy include thermal, mechanical, chemical, electrical, and nuclear energy.
Branches of Physics
To make the vast study of physics manageable, it is divided into several specialized branches:
- Mechanics: Deals with the laws of motion and gravitation.
- Thermodynamics: Deals with heat, temperature, and their relationship to work and energy.
- Electromagnetism: Studies electric and magnetic phenomena and properties of materials.
- Atomic Physics: Studies the structure and properties of individual atoms.
- Optics: Studies the physical aspects of light, its properties, and optical instruments.
- Sound: Focuses on the production, properties, and applications of sound waves.
- Nuclear Physics: Deals with the constituents, structure, and behavior of atomic nuclei.
- Particle Physics: Studies elementary particles and fundamental forces of matter and radiation.
- Astrophysics: Explores astronomical bodies and celestial objects through physics.
- Plasma Physics: Studies the ionic state of matter (plasma).
- Geophysics: Focuses on the internal structure and physical properties of the Earth.
