Magnetic Field

"The space around a magnet in which it can apply force on magnetic materials (like iron) or other magnets is called a magnetic field."

It represents the region where the influence of magnetism may be experienced around a magnetic source.

Lines of Magnetic Force

"Magnetic field lines are imaginary continuous curves originating outward from the North pole and terminating inward at the South pole."

Key properties of magnetic field lines include:

  • The magnetic field is significantly stronger at the poles because the field lines are crowded much closer together there.
  • The density of field lines at any point indicates the strength of the magnetic field.

Experimental Procedure: Sketching Magnetic Field Lines

We can sketch and visualize the magnetic lines of force around a bar magnet using iron filings through the following steps:

  1. Take a bar magnet and a quantity of iron filings.
  2. Place the bar magnet flat on a table (preferably covered with a sheet of paper or cardboard).
  3. Gently sprinkle the iron filings evenly around and over the bar magnet.
  4. Tap the table lightly. The iron filings will self-organize into continuous curving patterns, clearly outlining the magnetic lines of force extending from the North pole to the South pole.

Observation: The iron filings concentrate densely near the magnetic poles, demonstrating where the magnetic force is strongest.
