Basic Principle of a Compact Disc (CD) Player

"A Compact Disc (CD) player operates on the principle of optical data retrieval, converting digital audio data stored as microscopic pits and lands on a disc into smooth analogue sound waves."

Music and audio signals are stored on a compact disc in digital form (as binary sequences of $0\text{'s}$ and $1\text{'s}$). When a CD is played, the playback process involves several key stages:

  1. Optical Pickup System: A laser beam is focused onto the reflective surface of the rotating CD. The optical pickup system reads the digital data encoded on the disc tracks and transfers it as digital electrical signals.
  2. Digital-to-Analogue Converter (DAC): The retrieved digital data is fed into a Digital-to-Analogue Converter (DAC). The DAC translates these discrete digital binary numbers back into a continuous analogue signal representing the original music.
  3. Amplification and Output: The generated analogue signal is amplified by a linear amplifier and sent to loudspeakers or headphones for listening.

Note on Recording: The exact reverse process is used when music is originally recorded on a CD, where an Analogue-to-Digital Converter (ADC) transforms live sound into digital data.
