Radiation Hazards and Safety Measures Regarding Radiations
Radiation Hazards
"Prolonged or improper exposure to radioactive radiations can produce deep-seated burns, cellular damage, genetic mutations, and cancerous growths in biological tissues."
While different types of radiation exhibit distinct physical properties, all pose specific biological risks when interacting with living matter:
- Alpha ($\alpha$) Particles: Due to their low penetration power, external alpha sources present minimal danger because they are blocked by dead outer skin layers. However, if alpha sources are inhaled, ingested, or lodged inside the body through open wounds, they cause severe localized damage to internal body tissues due to their high ionization power.
- Beta ($\beta$) Particles: Beta particles possess higher penetration power and can damage body surface tissues and eyes. Internal exposure from ingested or absorbed beta emitters is also highly damaging.
- Gamma ($\gamma$) Rays: Gamma rays are highly penetrating and represent the most dangerous external radiation hazard. They pass completely through the human body, damaging deep tissues, organs, and bone marrow.
- Long-Term Biological Effects: Prolonged exposure can lead to cellular mutations resulting in hereditary/genetic changes, as well as the induction of cancerous growths (such as leukemia and skin cancers) in affected body tissues.
Safety Measures
Personnel working in hospital radiology departments, nuclear reactors, and research laboratories must strictly adhere to established safety protocols to minimize radiation risks:
- Safe Distance: Keep all radioactive sources at a safe distance from the body using remote handling tools.
- Minimize Exposure Time: Reduce the duration of time spent working near radioactive materials.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear appropriate laboratory coats, gloves, safety glasses, and close-toed shoes.
- Dosimeter Badges: Always wear a personnel dosimeter badge (film badge or TLD) to monitor cumulative radiation exposure regularly.
- Hygiene Control: Do not eat, drink, smoke, or touch exposed areas of skin while working in rooms where radioisotopes are handled.
- Use Tongs: Always use forceps or tongs to handle unshielded radioactive sources.
- Immediate Storage: Return radioactive sources immediately to their designated lead storage boxes after use.
- Heavy Shielding: Store all active radioactive sources inside thick lead containers.
- Waste Disposal: Dispose of all radioactive waste strictly in accordance with permitted environmental regulations and statutory control.
