Rectification

"Rectification is the process of converting an alternating current (AC) waveform into a direct current (DC) waveform, i.e., creating a new waveform that has only a single polarity."

A diode allows electric current to flow in the forward bias condition and blocks the current in the reverse bias condition. Rectification is classified into two types according to the output characteristics:

  • (i) Half-wave rectification
  • (ii) Full-wave rectification

Half-Wave Rectification

Since a diode allows AC current to flow only in one direction, it can serve as a rectifier. The AC source applies a voltage across the diode that alternates between positive and negative values.

During the positive half-cycle of the AC voltage, the diode is forward-biased and acts as a closed circuit, allowing current to flow through the load resistor $R$. During the negative half-cycle, the diode is connected with a negative supply which reverse-biases it; the diode then behaves like an open circuit and does not produce any output across the load.

Full-Wave Rectification

A full-wave rectifier uses two diodes. During the positive half-cycle of the input AC signal, diode $D_1$ is forward-biased (acting as a closed switch) and diode $D_2$ is reverse-biased (acting as an open switch). Therefore, current flows through the load resistor $R$.

During the negative half-cycle of the input AC signal, diode $D_2$ becomes forward-biased and diode $D_1$ becomes reverse-biased. Consequently, current flows through diode $D_2$ and through the load resistor in the same direction as before.
