Components of a Computer-Based Information System (CBIS)
"A Computer-Based Information System (CBIS) relies on an integrated set of hardware, software, data, procedures, and people to collect, process, store, and provide output as meaningful information."
To function efficiently, every CBIS is built upon five foundational components working together harmoniously:
- Hardware (Machinery): This comprises the central processing unit (CPU) and its supporting hardware. Essential equipment includes input/output devices, storage media, and communication devices required to physically capture and transfer data.
- Software: Software includes computer applications and operating systems. They instruct the CBIS hardware on how to process raw data and convert it into meaningful, actionable information. Programs are typically stored on memory chips, disks, or tapes.
- Data: Programs utilize data to generate helpful information. Data consists of raw facts, figures, phrases, or pictures that carry specific significance. Like programs, data is stored on digital media until required by the computer system.
- Procedures: These are the established guidelines, rules, and policies for creating and using information systems, typically documented in user manuals and technical papers. Procedures must be adaptable to accommodate periodic updates and changes in operational rules.
- People: A CBIS is completely useless without individuals who directly impact the success or failure of information systems. People develop and maintain software, enter data, construct hardware, write procedures, and ultimately decide the overall effectiveness of the CBIS.
